ABANDON SHIP - A BRIEF HISTORY

Abandon Ship started with a drunken conversation in a bar, well actually several drunken conversations in several different bars, by two flat mates - Duncan and Richard. Both with decent jobs, one marketing, the other retail, deciding, during beer fuelled rants about the lack of clean, simple tshirt designs to buy, that they in fact could do it “better” and bring something to the table.

After a few months of fairly repetitive chats, depicting the rise and fall of the best fictional clothing company ever to exist, they decided to finally put their money where their mouth was.

And so on March 14th 2011 in a lovely East Glasgow flat Abandon Ship Apparel was born.

With a “.com” and an investment of £150 each the would-be entrepreneurs started a brand with 3 designs of tshirts (all still available in some guise today - the Cross, Anchor and Wheel) by doing their first ever photo shoot behind their local Co-op using the headlights of a car for lighting.

Roll on several months and the lads, still working full time jobs, have managed to take back the original investment (a good thing as Duncan had taken his from the funds for his upcoming wedding!) Have increased their original collection beyond just tshirts, taken the brand on tour to several summer festivals and managed to open their first wholesale account in UK High Street store Pulp.

With their first Christmas out the way the brand quickly realise that Abandon Ship is no longer a part time venture and in Jan 2012 it is decided that Richard shall quit his job to work on the brand full time. He and the whole operation now run from the attic of his home (the lads are no longer flat mates at this point due to Dunc’s nuptials and Richard and his girlfriend moving to Leicester.)

Duncan follows suit soon after, leaving his job, after realising that he had used up over half his annual holidays in the first two months while taking Abandon Ship to trade shows and other events!

Fast forward to summer 2012, the lads can no longer do it alone, the business has grown to the point of becoming a real job! Trying to design whole collections, fulfil wholesale orders, run the website and everything else involved is slowly killing them (not to mention all the alcohol being consumed to balance the hard work with fun!)

And so we see the arrival of Phil - our Manchester based Sales Agent who takes over our wholesale accounts and takes over our hearts.

Abandon Ship also opens its first official office (no more bedrooms for us!) and with that we welcome Tony, our Stock Manager, and first official employee of the newly founded East Trading Co Ltd! (They are still based in the East of Glasgow to this day.)

With the introduction of these guys and Dunc’s dad helping them navigate the trials and tribulations of VAT and dealing with the dreaded Tax Man the brand is given a new burst of energy and Abandon Ship quickly becomes a force to be reckoned with. Moving all production overseas and focusing beyond just the printed design to the way the actual clothing fits and feels.

Traveling to Germany, Spain, Belgium, France, America and Iceland to further the brands presence in the second half of 2012 the guys meet and start working with new friends, artists and like minded people who help propel the brand further.

After the summer, with the brand still growing, its time for more change! Robbie joins the team and the office starts to get a little too cramped already! The guys move into a larger space, add Fiona to the roster of staff, buy a mobility scooter and start to really enjoy what the brand is all about and start creating some of the strongest products to date.

2013 has already been a momentous period for the lads, now stocked in ASOS, Foot Asylum and Ark in the UK and with German, Italian and Scandinavian Distributors they have started to attack the US and Australian Markets in a big way!

Their newest addition to the team, Jen, as Operations Manager has freed up Dunc and Rich to concentrate of dragging the brand forward (probably while wearing a storm trooper costume!)

Make sure to keep a sharp eye on this brand as they have a lot more up their sleeves.
